ScriptwritingHumanity faces important questions about how the planet can sustain nine billion people by 2050. There is a global nutrition crisis, with a dual problem of hunger and obesity. Meanwhile, climate change has major implications for global health and nutrition – with impacts on food security, access to clean water and sanitation, population migration and the threat of an increased number of natural disasters…

Catalyst is an intensive, three-month script development and filmmaking course. We’re offering seven IdeasTap members the opportunity to create a response to these global issues.
The aim of this course is to provide filmmakers in the first stage of their career with the skills and confidence necessary to create a high quality short film. The project will begin with an exploratory weekend workshop on 23 and 24 November 2013, followed by shorter, evening weekday workshops over the period of the course.

To start with, you’ll be asked to come up with an idea for a three to five-minute short film on a pressing global issue. Then, you’ll learn how to turn that idea into a script, including screenwriting format, technique and structure. This will be followed by a stage of intensive research. Y Touring Theatre Company will be able to put you in touch with their contacts in organisations such as the Wellcome Trust and University College London to make sure your idea is scientifically accurate.

You will also work with some of the world’s leading figures in the field of food and behaviour change. Through a series of workshops, presentations and Skype calls, these experts will provide information and inspiration for you to incorporate into your work.

Once your idea has been honed and is ready for production, you’ll learn camera and sound techniques, and, over the course of a weekend, shoot your screenplay. Editing will take place in the following week. At all stages of production, you’ll be fully supported by tutors and industry professionals.

The resulting film will be posted online, and Catalyst will encourage reviews and interaction through social media. The course tutors will also liaise with film festivals to enquire about possible entry and investigate further screening opportunities such as video on demand.

All sessions will take place at One KX, 120 Cromer Street, Kings Cross, London, WC1H 8BS.

This brief closes on Monday 11 November at 5pm and is open to IdeasTap members aged 16 to 25. Late entries will not be accepted under any circumstances, including technical issues – so make sure you don’t leave your application to the last minute. To apply please read the full brief on the Ideas Tap site.
